Question by David: If I can’t afford College, How else can I learn Video Game Concept Art Techniques?
So i took Fine Arts for 4 years and get my degree in 2 months. BUT near the end of it found that I would rather do art for video games or TV.
However, my University doesn’t teach you how to make a portfolio. (they instead teach you where to find food when you starve)
I have the skills already to paint, traditionally and digitally, but lack the knowledge on what Concept artists are looking for in a portfolio.
Any tutorials, suggestions or sites you can hook me up with?

The thing that art and trade schools don’t tell you up front is that you can get their entire education of the net for free. You just need to know where to look. If you already fill comfortable with fine arts you’re well on your way. I’m not sure if you already are aware, but some sites to check out are www.conceptart.org and www.cgsociety.org. I would go ahead and make a portfolio on CG society. Its a pretty legit place to ask for help and get your work critted by pros.
That said, games are an extremely competitive industry. Most studios do not not hire entry level concept artists. Keep in mind that you are also competing with guys that have 10 years of experience and a ton of triple A titles under their belts. A lot of people work their way up from being something else such as a 3D modeler or animator. Your best bet is to pick up some additional skills such as 3D or story boarding. Heck, your first job might not even be in games but cartoons on TV.
You’ll need a website and a digital reel. Very rarely do companies accept hard copy media anymore. Here’s an example from an animation student who’s now working as a concept artist:

Photography Course Online – How To Apply Easy Post-Production Techniques In Photoshop!
What are photographers talking about when they mention the ‘digital darkroom’? This is simply the use of photo editing software to make adjustments to photographs, after they have been saved to a computer. Many techniques used in a traditional film darkroom can also be accomplished digitally in today’s version of the darkroom. One popular editing program is Adobe Photoshop. For many photographers, this is the automatic choice when applying their post-production techniques. A well-structured photography course online will include training in these techniques.
Some of the most common post-production techniques in Photoshop include mode conversions. Most digital cameras capture photos in RGB format (RGB mode). However, there may be times when you need to change the mode or format of the file for creative effect or to use the photo for four-colour press printing-such as when it is incorporated into a magazine or other document that will be printed on a traditional four-colour printing press.
Let’s take these one at a time. First, let’s try converting an image into CMYK mode. Most printers require this when submitting a photo to be used in a four-colour press printed job. Just choose ‘Image’ from the top toolbar. Then ‘Mode’, then ‘CMYK’. Now save the image with a new name or add the letters CMYK to indicate it is saved in this format. Note: You will not see any difference when you view the image on your computer monitor, but this conversion is necessary for four-colour press printing jobs.
Another reason to change the mode is when transforming a full-colour image into black and white. Again, choose ‘Image’ from the toolbar. Then choose ‘Mode’, then ‘Grayscale’. Click ‘Yes’ when asked to confirm to discard the colour information in this file. The new black and white image will need to be saved as an RGB file again. So at the toolbar pick ‘Image’, ‘Mode’, and finally ‘RGB’. Save the image with a new name or add BW to show it is now black and white. If any of this sounds too technical, it really isn’t when you start experimenting, and a photography course online will easily guide you through the process.
There may be occasions when you wish to create a two-tone image that is neither black and white or colour. For instance, a sepia toned photograph is created as a two-tone (or duotone) image. The first step to creating a duotone image is to create a grayscale version as in the step above. After you are asked to confirm whether you want to discard the colour information in the file and you’ve clicked ‘Yes’, stop. Here is where you make the image duotone.
At the toolbar choose ‘Image’, ‘Mode’, and finally ‘Duotone’. In the dialog choose ‘Type: Duotone’ and then use black for ink one and a warm shade of brown for ink two. (Click ‘Load’ to select the colours you want). Then click OK.
Finally, you need to change the mode to ‘RGB’ again as you did above for the black and white image. Save the image with a new name or add the letters SEP to the image name so you know this is a sepia image. You should then have a warm image reminiscent of old photos.
This is just a tiny example of the enhancements possible in PhotoShop. Following a photography course online will open up the range of Photoshop tools and post-production techniques. Whilst Photoshop should not be seen as a tool for “repairing” an image, it does allow you to massively enhance or alter your original photograph, creatively. The only limit is your imagination.

Pixel parity. Never judge a digital photo without looking at the actual pixels. Image editors often squeeze the image down to the size of your screen (or, even worse, down to the size of a window on your screen). No matter how good the software is, it can’t remove a lot of pixels and still show you the same image. Your image editor should have a menu choice for “Actual Size,” “Actual Pixels” or “1:1.” Slide your chair back a few feet if you need to get a longer view when you’re looking at the actual pixels. And be sure to view your images full-screen; all good editors let you do that.
The display resolution of a digital television or computer display typically refers to the number of distinct pixels in each dimension that can be displayed. Some commentators also use this term to indicate a range of input formats that the display’s input electronics will accept and often include formats greater than the screen’s native grid size even though they have to be down-scaled to match the screen’s parameters. An example of pixel shape affecting “resolution” or perceived sharpness is displaying more information in a smaller area using a higher resolution, which makes the image much clearer. However, newer LCD displays and such are fixed at a certain resolution; making the resolution lower on these kinds of screens will greatly decrease sharpness, as an interpolation process is used to “fix” the non-native resolution input into the displays native resolution output.
So what are the mechanics of this “through the lens” shot to achieve the ghosting effect? 1. Stabilize the camera – using a tripod is best, a stable surface is a second option or, a steady hand as a last resort; 2. Set number of multiple exposures you require for the frame to (N) – usually 1 to 9; 3. For the roll of film in your SLR, determine the film speed (S); 4. Reset the camera film speed (Yes, you can override the setting) to (N S) or, if not an exact match, set it to the absolute closest speed ((N S) adjustment); 5. Take your picture, depressing the shutter button for a total count equalling the number of camera exposures you set in step “2″. Example: 1. You want 6 exposures on the frame (N=6) so set the number of multiple exposures to ’6′; 2. You’ve determined the film speed is 200 (S=200); 3. Reset the camera film speed to ’1200′ (= 200 6); 4. Depress the shutter button 6 times (for 6 exposures). REMEMBER: Check and reset the SLR film speed and number of exposures to their original settings before continuing with your next shot. Some SLRs will automatically reset the number of exposures back to ’1′ before advancing the film to the next frame. It’s always better to verify this.
