Question by webdev167: How can I restore the icons for Internet Explorer and Media Center on the desktop and start menu?
I currently am running Windows XP Media Center 2005 and I recently removed the Internet Explorer and Media Center shortcuts from my desktop and now I can’t launch the programs.
Any solutions? I can’t recover the icons using file recovery software.
I just tried the fix however there is no folder for media center any more and when I recreated the Internet Explorer shortcut, clicking it only created more shortcuts and didn’t launch the program

If they’re in your start – programs menu, just right click on them and create short cut, or grab them and drag them to your desk top.

Restore the Real Internet Explorer Desktop Icon in Windows 7

Restore the Real Internet Explorer Desktop Icon in Windows 7

When compared with the previous versions of Windows, the Internet Explorer icon is no longer always lay on the desktop and you can easily right-click it to quickly access the Internet Options screen in Windows 7. Actually it is entirely gone…Today I will show you how to restore it back.

An Easy Way to Bring Back the Internet Explorer Namespace Icon

If you just want to bring the IE icon back, what you need to do is just download the file, extract the contents, and then double-click on the w7_ie_icon_restore.reg file.

There’s also an undo registry file there if you want to get rid of it.

Download the Real Internet Explorer Icon Registry Hack

Manual Registry Hack

Launch Regedit.exe using the Start Menu search box, and then navigate to the following location:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT \ CLSID \ {871C5380-42A0-1069-A2EA-08002B30309D}

Right-click on the key on the left-hand pane, choose Export, and save it to a .REG file (say, ie-guid.reg)

Open up the REG file using Notepad.

From the Edit menu, click Replace, and replace every occurrence of the following GUID string

With a custom GUID string, such as:

Important step: Save the REG file and close Notepad, then double-click on the file to merge the contents to the registry. Either re-open the registry editor, or use the F5 key to reload everything with the new changes.

Navigate downto the following registry key:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT \ CLSID \ {871C5380-42A0-1069-A2EA-08002B30301D} \ Shellex \ ContextMenuHandlers \ ieframe

Double-click on the (default) key in the right-hand pane and set its data as:

With this done, press F5 on the desktop and you’ll see the Internet Explorer icon that looks like this:

Note: The icon appears incomplete without the Properties command in right click menu, so keep reading.

Final Registry Hack Adjustments

Firstly click on the following key which should still be viewable in your Registry editor window from the last step.

Then Double-click LocalizedString in the right-hand pane and type the following data to rename the icon.

Internet Explorer

Now select the following key:

Add a subkey and name it as Properties, then select the Properties key, double-click the (default) value and type the following:

Create a String value named Position, and type the following data:

Now the window should look something like this:

Under Properties, create a subkey and name it as Command, and then set its (default) value as follows:

control.exe inetcpl.cpl

Navigate down to the following key, then delete the value named LegacyDisable

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT \ CLSID \ {871C5380-42A0-1069-A2EA-08002B30301D} \ shell \ OpenHomePage

Now head to the this key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Explorer \ Desktop \ NameSpace

Create a subkey named {871C5380-42A0-1069-A2EA-08002B30301D}.

Finally press F5 to refresh the Desktop, and here is how the Internet Explorer icon would look like.

That’s it! You could just download the registry hack and get the icon back with a double-click rather than follow many steps. But you can choose what you like from this two ways. It just depents on you! Enjoy yourself!

Use Adobe Elements Video Tutorials To Restore Your Precious Photos

When we long for the past and to reconnect with better times we often look to our photographs to help us relive our cherished memories and remember loved ones who are no longer with us. Regrettably, while many things easily stand the test of time, photographs are not one of them. Due to the sun, water, dust, and other elements found in everyday life our photographs are prone to decay and it is vital to do what we can to keep them in their best state so that future generations can enjoy them as well.

Unfortunately many people have been faced with the question of what to do with photographs that are torn or have been ruined by moisture. Do you simply toss them in the trash and risk losing the memories they hold or do you spend loads of money to have the photo restored? Fortunately you don\’t have to do either. You can use photo editing software to restore the photos to their original condition.

Choosing the digital photo editing program that is right for you is not as difficult a choice as it might seem. There are a variety on the market however the best and easiest to use is without a doubt Adobe Elements. Once you have chosen your program the first thing you want to do is to create a digital image of your photograph so you can then edit it using your computer. Converting your photo from its paper version to a digital version is as simple as scanning it into your computer. Once the photograph is scanned into your computer you can begin the photo editing process.

Once you have opened your photograph inside your photo editing program I recommend that you create a copy by clicking on the file menu and selecting save as to rename your photograph. I recommend this so that you have a backup image on the off chance that you make a mistake. Once you have done this vital step you can begin to edit your photo using a few of the tools available. The tools I will talk about are the ones in Adobe Elements.

Please understand that photo restoration doesn\’t necessarily require any specialized training or specific skills. The tools included in Elements are easy to use and you will quickly become adept at them. Tools you will use most often with photo restoration include the smudge, blur and sharpen tool.

I want to give you a breakdown of each of the tools and tell you how you can use them to restore your photographs. Let’s start with the smudge tool. This tool is helpful when you want to eliminate any scratches or tears that are on the original photo. This tool can also be used to eliminate any objects in the background you wish to get rid of as well as correct photos that were not properly focused.

The next tool that you will use often is the blur tool. This tool lets you add tone to photos that were bleached by the sun. You are basically using this tool to make the photos darker and attempting to restore their original color and brightness.

The final tool that is used for this process is the sharpen tool. If any parts of the photo are blurred, whether it is in the original photo or from scanning it in, this tool will fix those bits.

Keep your cherished memories alive and well, restore them using Adobe Elements.

If your old photographs are looking worn and tired don\’t fear. Historic photos serve as amazing links to our past and preserving them is vital to maintain those great memories. Regrettably, like most things in life, their quality doesn\’t last forever and as time passes colors fade. There might be damage due to sunlight. Perhaps they have water stains or tears due to years of handling. Thankfully Adobe Photoshop comes well equipped with tools that can help us quickly revive these precious treasures.

Having your photos restored professionally can be somewhat expensive depending on the amount of wear and tear. Another factor in having them professionally restored is the fact that you are handing over your precious memories to a complete stranger.

Thankfully, with a bit of work, you can use Adobe Photoshop to restore your photos yourself. If you have access to a scanner all you need to do is scan your photos into your computer whereby you can then begin the restoration process. Below I have listed some techniques you can use to restore your photos.

The first step will be to create a digital version of your photograph using a scanner. Once you have done this you will want to open up Photoshop and the click on file and open then locate your photo to open it up in the program. At this point I recommend that you save your photo under a different name, in essence making a copy of your digital scan.

Once this has been done you can now begin the photo restoration process. I want to reiterate that you will want to make your changes to the copy of the photograph, not the original digital version.

The smudge tool is one of the most useful for restoring photographs. You can use the smudge tool to fix any tears in your photo. The smudge tool also can erase any blemishes as well, including moisture stains and sun damage. You can use it to repair any tears and improve the overall appearance of your photograph.

Another common problem with photos is lighting issues. Using the brightness and contrast panel you can easily adjust the lighting and create a more crisp, clear version of your original. There are a variety of other tools that are Included in the program that will help you enhance and restore your photograph.

I hope these few tips have convinced you that you can use Photoshop to restore your precious photos. The tools mentioned above are the tip of the iceberg when it comes to what Photoshop is capable of doing. After practicing a bit with these tools and others you will soon be taking ordinary photos and making them extraordinary. After a bit of practice on your part your friends will be asking you to restore their old photographs.

Restoring old photographs is only one small task you can accomplish using with Photoshop. Easily edit and enhance your photographs using this amazing program. Quickly turn your photos from ordinary into extraordinary with Adobe Photoshop.
