I did this as an excercise for the purpose of, quite simply, practice. It’s been a while since I attempted anything photo-real… It’s very good to do this kind of thing because it strengthens your freehand drawing abilities, as well as developing an eye for detail. Freehand drawn in photoshop cs2 (from a reference photo off to the side) with a wacom tablet. time-lapsed… real time was about 3 and a half hours. UPDATE: For the people that think this is fake– simply do a little research. It’s as easy as clicking on my username to see the list of all of my other videos. There you will find an array of different subjects and different mediums… Including photo real techniques with real paint. It it’s a pretty reasonable conclusion that if I can do the things I do with real paint– why would I feel the need or insecurity to fake it with the “less impressive” digital mediums? Why waste my time? You could also consider the efforts it would take to fake such a thing- consider the layering of the shadows and gradients… Look at how carefully it is done in these vids. There is a visible build-up of LAYERS of tones shadows and colors. To fake something like that would take so much effort, why would a guy who can do all of the other OBVIOUS traditional medium paintings on the same channel waste his time? Most images were produced in black and white for nearly a hundred years after the invention of photography, but now colour images have become commonplace. Creating strong three dimensional images on a piece of paper is one of the best attributes of black and white photography, as the effect can be more striking than with a colour photograph. Without the colour to distract us we become more aware of the subtle tones which can be found within a black and white image. In this article I will share the technique I use that will help you create beautiful, striking and moody black and white images from your colour photographs.

Digital cameras have a black and white mode but more information and detail will be recorded in colour, which will also create a higher quality printed image. This is why I always shoot in colour then convert images later. There are several ways of converting an image to black and white using Photoshop and many other image editing programs. You could simply desaturate the colours, but creating a black and white image with real tone and definition goes beyond this. Levels, curves and the Unsharp Mask can be used creatively with black and white conversion to provide further control over tones and contrast to create a stunning image.

Channel Mixer – I have found that using the Photoshop Channel Mixer is the easiest way to convert an image to black and white and produces the best results. The Channel Mixer allows you to control how much red, green and blue contribute to the final monochrome image.

The Channel Mixer can be selected from the adjustment layer popup menu in the layers palette or you can also access it from under the image menu.

Clicking on the left tick box entitled Monochrome will convert your photograph into a greyscale image, and gives you the ability to blend the red, green and blue channels. Adjust each of the sliders to produce an image to your liking. As a rule make sure that the total values for each channel adds up to 100%. This creates monochrome images that are the equivalent of ones shot on black and white film through red, green or blue filters. For example if you wanted to maximize cloud contrast in a blue sky, then a red filter would achieve this. I usually set the red channel to 0 and the green channel to 100 to cut down on the amount of noise, or sometimes a combination of red and green depending on the image.

Curves and Levels – Brightness and contrast can be adjusted in Photoshop by using the curves and levels tools, which can be found under Image > Adjustments Curves/Levels. Both curves and levels allow you to adjust the tonal range of an image. When using the levels command you can make adjustments to just three variables, highlights, shadows and midtones. I prefer to use curves as it gives you more precision. With curves you can adjust any point along a scale while keeping up to 15 other values constant. By adjusting the black point and white point in curves you can give your image more contrast. At opposite ends of the diagonal line you will find a small dot. When you grab hold one of the dots with your mouse and drag it around you will see the image change. To create more contrast drag the black point lower and the white point higher, so that either end of the diagonal line is curved. Practice using curves and levels and explore the different effects you can achieve with your images.

Unsharp Mask – The Unsharp Mask is my preferred tool for sharpening images, which can be found under Filter > Sharpen > Unsharp Mask. It is a traditional film compositing technique used to sharpen edges in an image and corrects blurring. The Unsharp Mask locates pixels that differ from surrounding pixels by the threshold you specify and increases the pixels’ contrast by the amount you specify. In order to get the look which I desire in my images I use the Unsharp Mask twice. I begin by using a high radius and lower amount, such as a radius of 50 pixels and an amount of 30%. This gives the image a much more intense look and details will stand out. The second time I use a lower radius of 1 pixel with a higher amount of 30%, which will correct any blurring and sharpen the image.

But there are some other excellent photo editors with unique functions and benefits on the market, they are: i.Mage, PhotoLine 32, PhotoFiltre, Pixia, GIMP and Ulead Photo Explorer. Follow me, let us to see the features and functions of them.

i.Mage is a small and fast graphics editor slanted towards quite and easy pixel editing, ala DPaint from the DOS/Amiga days. Instead of being a bloated behemoth with a zillion plugins it starts in under a second and it does a lot of the mundane jobs of image editing quickly and without fuss. It is a right tool for simple jobs.

PhotoLine 32 is a full featured image editor with support for text, vector and image layers. In addition to the standard editing features like painting, cloning, filtering, blending and flood fill it offers many special effects like swirl, shadow, glowing, distort, morphing, 3d projection and many dynamic layer effects. It supports 16 bits per channel, CMYK and Lab as well as color management with ICC profiles. The include image browser supports IPTC and EXIF data display and editing, batch conversion, HTML gallery output, batch renaming and more.

PhotoFiltre is a complete image editing and effects package, which will not only amaze us with features but also the fact that it is free (for personal use). It comes with many features that rival some commercial packages, as well as additional add-on that can be downloaded from the web site. PhotoFiltre offers all the standard editing features (selection, clone brush, paint brush etc.) as well as a large selection of image effects, photo masks, image adjustments, thumbnail browser and much more. The program also supports batch processing to apply filters, sizing, adjustments and transformations to a large number of images at once. PhotoFiltre comes with a modern, well designed interface and is well suited for everything from simple resizing to advanced photo editing. Photofiltre is a relatively small application and unlike Photoshop, will install and launch very quickly.

Pixia is a painting tool made exclusively for full color graphics. Pixia is the English version of a popular Japanese painting and retouch software. It supports mask, layer and many other editing functions. We can use our own customized brush tips and even use an image file as a brush tip to create unique effects. Its user-friendly interface is suitable for beginners as well as experts. Pixia supports the most common editing techniques and presents a user-friendly interface.

GIMP is an acronym for GNU Image Manipulation Program. It is a freely distributed program for such tasks as photo retouching, image composition and image authoring. It has many capabilities. It can be used as a simple paint program, an expert quality photo retouching program, an online batch processing system, a mass production image rendered, an image format converter, etc. GIMP is expandable and extensible. It is designed to be augmented with plug-ins and extensions to do just about anything. The advanced scripting interface allows everything from the simplest task to the most complex image manipulation procedures to be easily scripted. GIMP is written and developed under X11 on UNIX platforms. But basically the same code also runs on MS Windows and Mac OS X.

Ulead Photo Explorer is a complete solution for the digital photography enthusiast. Photo Explorer combines easy-to-use tools for acquiring, viewing, organizing, adjusting and sharing digital images and video clips. Easily navigate through powerful program functions with clear and simple toolbars. Browse through a file tree folder structure, similar to Windows Explorer. Choosing the right photo editing software is very important and since there are several editing softwareâ??s out there it is important to research them all and through this research choose the one you see will benefit you most.

Adobe is one of the best Photo editing software in the market. Adobe has a variety of softwareâ??s for editing which cover video, photos, PDF files and audio. The adobe software for editing photos is called Photoshop and is used the world over when it comes to making the pictures look better than they were before. If you are not so good at editing with Photoshop there is a tutorial which will guide you but it will be better to get someone to teach you how to use it and also start with an older version of Photoshop even though the new one has some added features.
