Give the paint to your pet and create some unique canvas art!
They say your pets are your best friends, but for these owners their best friends are true stars. Canvas art and oil paintings are now being created by your pets, from seals to horses to turtles, they’re all getting involved!
In 2008, painting by pandas, frogs, rhinos, the list goes on, were being sold at the Association of Zoos and Aquariums- ‘Art by Animals’ sale. In 2005, a few abstract paintings produced by Congo the chimpanzee flew off the auction block for a total of ,352, whilst some of the more famous Banksy artwork failed to sell.
A recent study shows that art and psychology students could differentiate between abstract canvas wall art created by humans and animals. This has not yet stopped people investing in different types of animal-art.
However, does the animal artist view his or her work as art?
As aesthetically pleasing as it is creating abstract canvas art did we ever think that animals would think the same? Dr’s Gisela Kaplan and Lesley Rogers has released a report called “Elephants that paint, birds that make music” where they attested that “mainstream science has yet to be convinced that animals have an aesthetic sense…these days some scientists who study animals are increasingly convinced that they do have cognitive abilities”- a resounding maybe then.

Rogers and Kaplan say that canine artists “can see movement well and might prefer to express are, if that is what they do, in moving pictures”. “The dog’s eyes see well at a distance but cannot focus on close objects. Anything closer to them than about a foot to a foot and a half- as paintings on canvas made by a brush between their teeth would be- is out of focus.”
Horses around the world should all reach for a paintbrush and begin to pain. A well known horse-artist Cholla, once saw her owner painting the fences in their Nevada home, Cholla took to the hobby himself and has now sold work across the world.
In Spain a black pure-bred Dutch Friesian stallion has been creating acrylic canvas’s that sell from anything between £1500 to £3000. Elephants have also been busy creating many artistic masterpieces; you may have seen the You-Tube clip of an elephant painting a fellow elephant holding a flower?
Even turtles have involved themselves in the act; Koopa a turtle from the US has created an outstanding 827 paintings, which have been hung in galleries in countries such as Canada and Bahrain. The owner of Koopa, Kira has released a statement saying “what was safe for Koopa is not safe for your turtle, especially if you don’t do the necessary research and take the time to develop a trusting relationship. The actions of a frightened turtle could easily lead to respiratory infections, blindness and even death”
