The “point of sale” (POS), or “checkout” as it is more commonly known as, refers to the location where a transaction is made. The first known point of sale program was developed by IBM in 1973 and made use of electronic cash registers (ECR). The system utilized relatively new technologies at the time such as client-server and peer to peer communications, Local Area Networks (LAN) for simultaneous backups and remote initialization. A year after it was developed, it was already of great use to retail stores around the United States.

In 1979, another POS program was developed, this time by Gene Mosher, which he used in his restaurant business. His creative software ran on an Apple II computer and was programmed to receive customer orders at the restaurant’s entrance, and a copy with full details would be printed inside the kitchen. This way, customers received their food at their tables much faster than any other restaurant. Mosher also developed the first graphical touch screen point of sale program in 1986 using an Atari ST computer and the Neochrome bitmap graphics editor.

In the post-1990s, the development of multi-functional POS programs went hand-in-hand with the development of local processing power, local storage data, networking, and the graphical user interface. Various POS programs were also developed for operating systems such as Windows and Unix.

For the past two decades, vendors and retailers alike have been working on hardware interface standardization of the developing point of sale programs, aiming also to simplify interconnection of multiple POS devices (hardware and software). Standardizations such as OPOS for Windows and JavaPOS for Java are some of the products of this initiative. OPOS, which stands for OLE (object linking and embedding) for POS, was the first globally-accepted standard and was a product of the joint efforts of Microsoft, NCR Corporation, Epson, and Fujitsu-ICL. JavaPOS was developed by Sun Microsystems, IBM, and NCR Corporation. These two developments aimed to make the modern point of sale programs and point of sale hardware platform independent.

The unfolding of the new millennium gave way to the most advanced development of POS software yet. As a result, modern point of sale programs are all expected to have fast and consistent speed, they should be reliable and easy to use, with multi-functionality, remote supportability, and can be bought at a much lower cost than ever before.

Point of sale programs have come a long way since the development of electronic cash registers. Today, retailers can enjoy the benefits of point of sale programs as a way of making business transactions easier, faster, and free from unavoidable human errors. Most of all, point of sale programs are cost-efficient, and often produce the highest return on investment that a retail business owner could make into a technology solution.

Creating motion graphics is often the synergy of many different applications and skill sets. In addition to a good sense of design, an artist involved in modern motion graphics needs to have knowledge of four major areas: bitmap graphics, vector graphics, 3D graphics and compositing software.

Bitmap graphics, also referred to as pixel-based graphics, is probably the most common form and the most familiar to the laymen. In bitmap graphics, the images are composed of different colored dots (known as pixels) that together form an image. Bitmap images are typically photographs or real world images. Resolution of the image is dependent on how many pixels comprise the image. The more pixels in an image, the higher the resolution. As a result, the file size increases. Although there are several applications on the market that one can use to create and treat bitmap images, by far the most popular is Photoshop. Knowledge of Photoshop is integral to modern motion graphics.

The other form of graphics is vector, also known as resolution independent graphics. Vector graphics are lines, curves and shapes that the computer interprets through mathematical equations. Vector-based images are usually illustrations, logo designs or other comparatively simplistic compositions with potential complexities. Whereas bitmap graphics are composed of pixels and can become distorted if scaled too large, vector graphics have unlimited resolution. Because the information used to compose the graphics is all mathematics, the image can be the size of a building without losing resolution. Several vector graphics packages exist, the most common being Adobe Illustrator.

With the leaps in computing power in recent years, 3d graphics have become a more accessible and practical tool for motion graphics artists. The world of 3D graphics is immense and comprises many different disciplines from architectural rendering to major motion picture special effects; however, these applications can be used to solve design problems that only they can solve. Both bitmap and vector graphics are inherently flat, but a motion graphics artist can use a 3D software package to take these flat graphics into the third dimension. Many 3D programs, such as Maya, Lightwave or 3D Studio Max, are up to the task, Maxon’s Cinema 4D’s use of layers and hierarchies will be familiar to users of Adobe’s programs. This program is simply more intuitive than its bigger and more complex rivals, making it a superior package for the motion graphics artist.

Last and probably most importantly is compositing. This is where all your flat graphics will come to life! Compositing software creates motion through the use of key frames and the program interpolates the in-betweens. A skilled motion graphics artist will use bitmap, vector and 3D graphics together to create attractive and effective animations. The most common consumer level compositing program is Adobe After Effects. In addition to their familiarity with the Adobe software, After Effects users also benefit from the ease of integration it offers with the bitmap and vector graphics of Photoshop and Illustrator, respectively.

A good motion graphics artist tries to accomplish one central idea: communicating effectively while retaining the viewer’s attention. Today’s audiences have a shorter attention span than ever, as well as a more refined and ever more savvy recognition of a good graphics treatment. A video that presents itself with lackluster or uninspired visual treatments is doomed to appear “behind the times” and lose credibility as a result. Knowledge of the four facets of motion graphics is indispensable and serves as the cornerstone of effective modern two-dimensional animation.

Today’s editing computers are a marvel in my opinion. Did you know that before computers, it took around one million dollars of equipment to stock a professional editing room? You needed multiple tape decks, a switcher, an effects generator, a character generator, an audio mixer, signal enhancers, multiple monitors and years of experience to operate it all.

To rent out all this stuff by the hour, it cost $500-$1,000 per hour to edit. A thirty second spot could easily take ten hours to edit, even a relatively simple one. That’s ten grand just for one step in the production of something that lasts half a measly minute!

Ouch!

We’ve got it great compared to that. Today, ten grand is More than enough to buy a total system and all the software you’d ever need to edit a lifetime of shows.

Computer editing is loads of fun and the creative possibilities are endless.

Computer editing revolutionized the entire television and video production industry. Computer video editing put power in the hands of the little guy, not just the companies that could afford million-dollar edit suites.

For a small investment, (maybe nothing beyond a computer that has free video editing software already on it) you have the opportunity to produce professional quality edited video stories.

I got windows movie maker version 5.1 free on the Compaq I bought at Sams Club for half-off after Christmas.

Movie maker will easily edit together you video and add professional looking graphics. You have two lines of audio that you can cut and paste. Any Mac comes with free iMovie, which is probably a better program than movie maker and certainly a killer freebie. Both of them are killer freebies. If you want more creative and complex editing options than what freebies give you, you can get awesome software for $50-$300. If you go full tilt boogie, software that Hollywood uses can be had for $1,300 Apple’s final cut pro, now called Studio 2, is the ultimate video editing software experience in my humble opinion.

When FCP first came on the market, it was chump change at $1,000, compared to its competitor, Avid with it’s $50,000 version of media composer. At the time, people were clamoring to learn media composer because it seemed like such a revolutionary bargain compared to the million-dollar fully equipped suites. Then, all of a sudden, you can get a program equal to media composer for just a grand? Holy crap!

Final cut pro’s price today of $1,299 might seem high to newbies, but the power of FCP can not be understated. It can do anything you can imagine and then some. Hollywood uses FCP. However, chances are you’re not Hollywood bound. Final cut express is only $300 and gives you all the punch you’d probably ever want unless you’re competing on the very uppermost levels. FCE is what I just bought.

Many companies put out video editing software but I must confess my prejudice for Macs and Apple editing software. That’s what I always used when working for large companies and the vast majority of professionals I know prefer Apple computers to PCs for video editing and other large-file creative tasks. There’re a million and one reasons for that, but I’ve seen such heated debates about the topic, it’s scary. Here’s an actual conversation

I witnessed: We’ll get PC’s for editing over my dead body! That can be arranged! I hate those crazy things!

I try not to get that hot about it, but my money goes to Apple.

Since PCs solidly dominate the market whether I think they should or not, there are plenty of video editing programs for the PC market.

Sony Vegas movie studio is popular. I’ve seen it for $99 at the Best Buy store down the street and for $63.99 on Amazon. The reviews are mixed, some people give up in confusion but others plod through the learning curve and say it’s a good program. It can do quite a bit more than the freebies.

Corel DVD movie maker 6 goes for about $48 on Amazon and pinnacle studio runs about $50. Neither is quite as sophisticated as Sony Vegas, but as the price indicates, you can do more with them than you can with the freebies.

Corel paint shop pro for still picture and Sony Vegas combine into one and they call it Corel Sony visual creation. $110 on Amazon.

Video editing software has a learning curve, but it’s really not any more difficult than using a word processing program.

Keep in mind that video editing demands a lot of your computer. Video files are huge, and making them spin and dance requires power. Get the biggest, most powerful computer you can afford. The Mac G-5 blows any other computer out of the pond when it comes to computer video editing. But whatever you have can work.

Moms are usually the experts when it comes to scrapbooking. Years of documentation (according to the number of children, of course) have given them plenty of practice in this addictive craft activity.
