Professional Standard Way Of Mastering Adobe Photoshop – Mastering Dimensions and Resolution Of An Image

Adobe Photoshop has the unique ability to help you change the dimensions and resolution of an image. Mastering Adobe Photoshop will provide you with the ability of achieving professional standard results for press or web. This tutorial will empower you to be able to save the pictures in different formats, tweak particular areas of the picture, apply special effects and be handy with layers.

To expand slightly, this Tutorial For Adobe Photoshop will enable you to view and change the dimensions of an image, alter the size of the canvas, crop a picture, undo and re do commands, utilize the history palette, make a snap-shot and use the history brush.

The finer you keep the resolution of a picture the sharper will be the image produced. When an image is viewed on a computer screen, its best to set its resolution at 72 dpi for maximum clarity. For you to change the image size and resolution you need to select image size on the image menu. Alternatively you can right click on the title bar of the image window and select image size. To change the image size and keep the resolution constant you need to select the resample image check box to fix the resolution to the image size. The other option is for you to select the “constrain proportions” check box to ensure that image’s proportions remain unchanged.

Changing the properties of an image causes it to distort. Every so often you will find that an image is the right size but there is little space around it, leaving you with no room to work with. In such a scenario you may want to increase the size of canvas of the image. When that is done the file size enlarges without impacting the elements that constitute the image. The additional space that accrues takes on the background color of the image. In order to achieve this select canvas size from the Image menu, or select canvas size by right clicking the image window title bar. This will display the canvas size dialogue box. Choose one of the boxes in the anchor area to define where the additional space has to be added. Fill in the new dimensions for the canvas into the width and height boxes and click ok. Voila the canvas size has increased.

Cropping an image has to do with removal of irrelevant portions of the image, so that you are left with the portion that is relevant. To crop an image – click on Crop in the tool box or select crop from the image menu. The mouse pointer will change into the crop tool shape when positioned over the image. Click and drag over the image to mark out the area to be retained. Now to crop the image one needs to press enter or cancel the command by pressing Esc.

One can see that Photoshop is very handy software and lets you have a lot of fun working with photographs. It empowers you to create images of a professional level, and in the process makes you more knowledgeable about the art of photography.

It is a duel to the death! I thought this would good timing for a Harry Potter-esque video due to last movie “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows part. 2″ coming out shortly. This was shot on a Sony PMW EX1 and edited in Adobe After Effects CS5 and Final Cut Pro. I used some action essentials stock footage as well as optical flares for the spells. I also used the plug-in camera tracker from the foundry for the scene with the priori incantatem.

Can you add “dimensions” inside an Adobe Photoshop image itself?

Question by TJ: Can you add “dimensions” inside an Adobe Photoshop image itself?
I want to create a blueprint effect, ad have succeeded in the basic execution of the edge filter tricks, etc. All I am lacking now in my picture are the measurements and dimensions inside the picture. I want the dimensions to be displayed within the image itself, very much like an actual blueprint where dimensions in the picture are vital. Does anyone know how to do this in Photoshop CS3?

How do I Resize an Image

How do I Resize an Image

How do I resize an image is a question often asked. Clicking and dragging is not the answer! I’m delighted to be able to share with you the correct way to resize – and it’s really not difficult at all. With these simple steps your images will look better and your website or eBook will download much quicker too.

First let me explain the difference between clicking and dragging and resizing correctly:

What clicking and dragging actually does is it changes the physical dimensions of the image i.e. cms – it doesn’t change the actual file size, which is what we really want to do. Resizing changes the file size of your image – you will see the difference very soon.

Here’s some info about online file sizes to help you understand what we are about to do

1000 Kilobytes = 1 Megabyte (a megabyte is quite big!) and 1000 Megabytes = 1 Gigabyte (a gigabyte is very big!)

There is no ideal size for an image – as speeds and broadbands vary – but I would recommend a file size of about 50-90 kilobytes. Keep them as small as possible but not so small as to affect the overall quality.

A note of caution – too many large images on your website, or indeed in your eBook, and they could take forever to download, if at all – your viewer may get bored and move on! So, from now on, we will get into the habit of always checking the file size of an image before we use it – to avoid any problems later. It will be time well spent.

Here’s how to find out what the current file size of your image is – and – what we will need to resize an image

Right click on the image and go to Properties. Try it now! Note the file size. Irfanview is by far the most popular software used for resizing – and the great news is it’s free to download. Go to http://www.irfanview.com and download it now.

Now before we begin find an image of say 1.2 Megabytes in size or similar. Find one now! Your desktop is usually a good place to look – I’ll bet most of your existing images are big!

Let’s resize an image now

Double click on the irfanview icon on your desktop to open it.
Under the word File (top left), you will see an open yellow folder – click on that.
Find the image that you want to resize and click on it.
The image will open up in your irfanview screen.
Now click on the Image option – you will find this along the top row where File is.
Click on Resize/Resample (about half ways down) – a new box will open to Set New Size.
Ensure – Preserve Aspect Ratio box (below) is ticked – then when you change the height the width will automatically change too. Keep DPI at 300.
Now change the Height to say 300 – note the Width changes too.
Then click Ok and see what happens to your image. Cool!
Now go to File and Save as – Important, ensure the Save as type box has JPG format in it. If it doesn’t go to the drop down menu and choose jpg format.
By saving it in jpg format this will allow a box to open (top right) called JPEG/GIF save options. You can change the quality of the image to your preference here.
Now save your resized image in the same folder as the original – but give it a new name, to keep the original in tact.
Close irfanview. Find your original image and the newly resized image.
Note the different sizes of each – your new image will be considerably smaller.
It should now read kilobytes and not megabytes.

And Viola! You have just resized an image without clicking and dragging! Well Done!
