Q&A: How should an external flash be sincronised to a digital camera?

Question by John S: How should an external flash be sincronised to a digital camera?
I am using a basic digital camera but want to use an external flash. If I fire the flash the same time as the shutter the camera does not see the flash, What delay should I have for it to see the flash?

When you say basic digital camera I am assuming its a point and shoot.

a point and shoot does a pre-flash either to reduce red eye or to meter ( for automatic settings)

to use an external flash you need to set the camera’s flash in manual mode such that it fires only once
and set the external flash to optical slave mode so that it sees a flash go and fires at the same time.

most DSLR’s have a sync speed of 1/250 i.e. shutter speed has to be slower than 1/250th of a second
however the point and shoot camera’s have a leaf shutter and are able to sync faster than that.

what you need to do is find that manual flash mode

Creating Flash Animations in Adobe Illustrator CS5 and max tutorial

Over the years, Illustrator has developed a closer relationship with Adobe Flash. For instance, we can import Adobe Illustrator files (.aifiles) into Flash and retain layers, convert Illustrator symbols to Flash symbols, and much more. That’s great, but what if you don’t use Adobe Flash? Can you still create a simple Flash animation? Yes!

The technique described in this article is mainly for people who aren’t Flash wizards, or who already have artwork in Illustrator and don’t want to bother bringing that content to Flash to create a simple animation  The simple animation will be generated as a published SWF file (.swf) that can be used on a website, for instance. The SWF format is ideal for the vector content, but you can also save raster images in SWF format or mix raster and vector graphics.

NOTE

The .swffile that’s created when you export as .swfcan be played in the standalone Flash Player, on a device that supports Flash content, or in a web browser with the Flash Player browser plug-in.

Figure 1 The Flash banner animation you’ll create in this tutorial.

NOTE

If you want to see the live animation examples used in this article, download and unzip the SWF files.

About Animation in Illustrator

Before you jump into creating the content that you’ll export as a Flash animation, you need to understand that there are two main types of animations you can create in Illustrator:

You can animate blended objects in two ways–as a sequence, or as an animation that builds.
You can create a layer-based animation.

A “blend” animation is created from a blend object in Illustrator. You can create multiple types of blends, including a smooth color blend, a distance-based blend, and a step-wise blend. So, for instance, you can draw a star on one side of the artboard and a circle on the other side of the artboard. Using the Blend tool, you can create a blend between them (see max tutorial). This way, when you export to the SWF file, the animation will appear to morph the star into the circle.

Figure 2 Example of a blend-based animation (at a slow speed).

A layer-based animation works much like an animated GIF on the Web. When you export the Illustrator file as a .swfthat’s played in the Flash Player, each layer in the document is turned on and then off, starting from the bottom and working its way up in the layer stack (see max tutorial).

Figure 3 Example of a layer-based animation. (The corresponding SWF is shown at a slow speed.)

You can also combine a blend animation with a layer-based animation for some interesting animation effects, and that’s what we’ll do in this article.

How to make a sniper shooting game in Adobe Flash CS4 (Part 1/2 – Level design, Script + Sound FX)

This easy to follow, HD tutorial, will show you step-by-step how to make a Sniper-Scope shooting game with Flash CS4. ** Download the flash file I created in this video! ** www.mediafire.com —- Frequent Problems / FAQ —- 1. The script doesn’t work, I get error messages talking about ‘missing information’. You’re using Actionscript 3.0. The scripts in this tutorial use the syntax of Actionscript 2.0. Head into File, Publish settings, and under the ‘Flash’ tab, change the ‘Script’ drop down to ‘Actionsript 2.0′. 2. When I click on my button and open the Actions panel it says ‘Actions cannot be applied’. Either: Make sure you converted your object into a button symbol (hit F8), OR, change your Actionscript to AS2. (Refer to question 1.) 3. My frames are disappearing, or the movie is flickering. Be sure to have applied the stop(); script for each frame. 4. The scope won’t follow my mouse. Make sure your scope has been given an instance name in the properties menu. In this case it is ‘scope’ (Without the ‘ ‘ ). Also double check you correctly copied the script at 5:37. 5. The scope drags from the corner, not the centre. When converting the scope into a MovieClip, in the box that opens up, set the Registration (the little diagram with 9 white squares) to the centre, by cliking the middle square. If you forget to do this and have already converted the movieclip (like myself in the video), follow what I’m doing at 2:36. (Double click the MC to edit it, use the Align menu
