Five Foreign Film Favorites

Are you curious about classic cinema outside the golden gates of Hollywood? Would you like to see well established critically acclaimed films that influenced many of the great current-working directors such as Woody Allen, Scorsese and Steven Spielberg? If so, these are five delicious visual delicacies to wet your would be film critic eyes.

Seven Samurai – is the Ultimate Epic. It has all the swift swordplay of a ten-year-old boy’s wet dream. The cinematography is dazzling and the story moving and majestic. Fans of epics such as “300” and “Troy” will be surprised with the film’s intricacy and depth. The tale concerns a group of Samurai who are sworn to protect a small peasant community against a group of bandits. During this heroic struggle the group is forced to many devastating, heart wrenching sacrifices.

Jules and Jim – is a fun and melancholy romp in the live of two best friends and their love for the same woman. The strains of this love ultimately result in the death of two of the members of this love triangle. Future French films such as “Amelie” would both owe and homage the films revolutionary method of narrative storytelling.

8 /2 – is a ravishing, beautiful and hysterically funny surrealistic comedy of director preparing to direct a film. It delves into his fears, hopes, and playful daydream fantasies to an almost Freudian level. The film also takes gentle stabs at the industry, religious groups, and star infidelity. Directors such as Tim Burton and Terry Gilliam owe a lot to the films creative and wacky visuals.

Wild Strawberries – is a provoking film about old age and accomplishment in life. It dwells on an elderly man’s realization of his soon approaching death, his relationship to the next generation and his past. It is both a film of the encounters of road and a film of haunting images of the mind.

M – is an amazing German Expressionist proto-noir masterpiece. The towns authorities, parents, and thieves are clenched with anxiety in the desperate search for the whistling child murderer played by Peter Lory, who would later go on to act in Hollywood masterpieces such as “Casablanca” and “The Maltese Falcon.” The highlight of this film is the famous trial seen which is guaranteed to leave every member of the audience clenching the arms of their chair. This film is also known for being the first film to portray a serial killer.

The top 5 Halloween books for children all come from the same author, Linda Glovach. In her collectible series of children’s books, I believe she has completely covered all a child needs to celebrate Halloween to the
fullest.
Each unique book is 40 pages of sheer magic for a elementary school child.

The Little Witch and all her friends were my favorite activity books as a little girl. I remember sitting under the dining room table following the Little Witch gang through all their adventures and then having my mom help me recreate some of their magic at home. I vowed to write engaging books like hers when I grew up…and I am. Abracadabra!

Recently I came across The Little Witch’s Book of Yoga and with happy tears in my eyes recalled the magical world the little witch creates while teaching valuable information. Stories, art activities, recipes, party ideas and costumes are all included in each charming book.

In The Little Witch’s Book of Yoga, while it goes through the different poses and explains the practice…there are also three unique parties that are perfect to host during the Halloween season; The Moon-Gazing party, called Tratakum, Yoga, Toga, Ghost Party and a Candle Concentration Ceremony. Each complete with simple recipes and activities with illustrations that capture the imagination and make you believe in the enchanting characters.

The Little Witch’s Halloween Book has even more specific information on the holiday, activities, costume ideas, recipes and so much more. Children with a 2nd grade reading level can read these books themselves and by using things around the house, can engage in imaginative play. The book also makes a great reference guide to all things Halloween for elementary school parties, room mothers, teachers as well as parents and children. All can find interesting information and fun recipes to try.

The Little Witch’s Black Magic Book of Disguises is an amazing source for costume ideas, not just for Halloween either. These kid friendly ideas are good year round. Who knows when you might need a mustache disguise or directions for hat making of all sorts.

Top Five Teen Pop Icons

They came, we saw, they conquered. These words best describe teen pop sensations. Every generation has one. We hold their words sacred and fill our rooms with their posters.

Many of us older ones may have forgotten who our teen icons were, but here are the top five teen pop icons we’ve seen in recent times:

1. Justin Bieber>

Ask any fifteen-year-old who Justin Bieber is, and the teen will tell you not only his name but also his birthday and maybe even the last school he attended. They could also tell you his favourite food (spaghetti and meatballs), his favourite colour (purple for shirts, blue for surroundings), as well as his shoe size (7 ½).

Justin Bieber was discovered by the world when he was just twelve years old.

His mom, Pattie, posted video clips of him on YouTube, which were then found by a marketing executive of a record label. From there, Justin was given collaborative projects with Usher, and later with Justin Timberlake, to produce several songs. Thus began the young singer’s journey to be the teen icon he has become today.

In less than five years, Justin Bieber’s first album “My World 2.0” sold more than 5 million albums worldwide. He is also the youngest male performer, after the then 13-year-old Stevie Wonder, to score a number 1 album in Billboard 200. His YouTube clips have reached a staggering 2.2 billion views.

Today, Justin Bieber has over 40 million Facebook and Twitter fans. And with the release of his Never Say Never concert documentary, the pop teen icon has added to his belt the highest grossing concert film in US history since 1984.

2. Miley Cyrus

Miley Cyrus is best known for her role as Miley Stewart/Hannah Montana in Disney Channel’s TV show Hannah Montana. Her character as a girl with a teen celebrity secret identity has made her a teen icon in real life. And with her success came two full-length movies: “Hannah Montana: The Movie” and “The Last Song”, as well as a voice-over role in the animated film “Bolt”.

Miley Cyrus is a successful musician as well. Her single “The Climb” reached the 4th spot in the US Billboard Hot 100, while the pop song “Party in the USA” peaked at number 2 in the same US Hot 100 charts.

3. The Jonas Brothers

The Jonas Brothers actually started as just Nick Jonas, the youngest of the three brothers that make up the group. (There is a fourth brother, Frankie, who is eight years younger than Nick.) Nick was being groomed for a solo singing career, but the producer heard his brothers sing back-up for him and thought they sounded better together. Thus, the iconic boy band was formed.

The siblings have made appearances in several Disney Channel originals, including “Hannah Montana” and “Camp Rock”. In 2008, the album “A Little Bit Longer” won them a nomination at the Grammy’s for the Best New Artist category. In the Teen’s Choice Awards, the Jonas brothers have won 14 awards between 2008 and 2010.

The Jonas Brothers are also well known for their advocacy against premarital sex. Each of them wears a purity ring, which symbolizes their promise of sexual abstinence until after marriage.

4. Pixie Lott

Pixie Lott is a British singer-songwriter. She is also an actress and a dancer. This teen pop icon started her career in 2005 by appearing in the West End musical “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang” and on BBC One’s “The Sound of Music” as Louisa Von Trapp.

Lott was 14 years old at that time.

In 2009, Pixie Lott released her first album “Turn It Up”. Her first single “Mama Do” was released in MySpace and YouTube and was seen by three million viewers. The song peaked at the UK Singles Chart at number one position ¬– to her utmost surprise.

Pixie Lott released several more singles. Her album has sold over 600,000 copies in the UK alone and has received a double-platinum in 2010.

5. Hanson

Hanson is composed of brothers Isaac, Zac, and Taylor Hanson. The group may be out of the spotlight today, but in the 1990s, they were huge!

The Hanson brothers are best known for their smashing hit single, “MMMBop”, which earned them a double nomination at the 40th Grammy Awards. Their album “Middle of Nowhere” sold 10 million copies all over the world.

Their big success, however, was short lived. Their next studio album, “This Time Around,” only sold a million copies. Nonetheless, the group still records and still achieves limited success. To date, they have sold more than 15 million records worldwide. In 2010, they released the album entitle “Shout It Out”, which debuted at number 30 in the US Billboard 200 and has peaked at number 2 in the US Billboard Top Independent Albums.

Snapping Elements in Flash Designs: Five Ways of Doing It with Flash CS4 Professional

Today publishers are open for Flash web site design since it enhances the look and feel of the web pages. Creating innovative animations, videos, and images are all part of web site flash design . A Flash design involves many stages and detailed work on part of the designers. One of the processes of creation involves snapping elements into the right position. This can be best done using Flash CS4 Professional.

With its snapping features, Flash designers find it handy to align the elements so as to create the desired effect. Flash CS4 Professional provides the designers with five main snapping features that are used in Flash designs. The first is Snap Align, which helps you to align elements after you have dragged them to a distance defined by the user from the edge of the Stage. For viewing alignment guides, choose View then Snapping and then Snap Align. During a dragging process, the alignment guide is displayed by Flash. The second major feature is Snap to Grid, which helps in positioning of an element’s center or edge in a user-defined grid.
