Question by Craig S: I need help with Adobe Photoshop filters?
I am kinda new to Photoshop, I currently have CS5 extended version. I installed a few new filters, and I copied them to C://Program Files/Adobe/Adobe Photoshop CS5/Plugins, the plugins folder and the filters folder I’ve tried both, then I started Photoshop, went under the filters menu and they weren’t there. What am I doing wrong?!
Any help would be appreciated, and any tips or tricks Thanks.

Answer by Mujer Alta Here’s a simple way of installing and using plugins. Make a folder on your desktop (or in Documents, Pictures… whatever’s convenient for you) and put your new plugins/filters/effects in this folder. Open Photoshop. Edit>Preferences>Plugins and click on “Choose”. Find you way to your plugins folder, click on it to highlight it and click OK. Doing it this way has 2 good outcomes: 1. it’s easier to just stick new plugins into the folder and 2. you can back up this folder so that, if you ever have to reinstall Photoshop, you’ve got all those plugins in one place and won’t have to go online and hunt for them or pay for them again. When you open Photoshop, your new filters will be listed by their creator’s name at the end of the listing of filters.
You can do the same thing with brushes, shapes, etc. Use the Preset Manager to create sets and then load them from their off-site folders when you want to use them.
Take advantage of editing without even touching your image – do so using Adobe Photoshop CS3 and Smart Object and Smart Filters. This clip is taken from a full training DVD entitled “Adobe Photoshop CS3 – Upgrade Guide” available from MyDigitalWorks.com

Filters have two different meanings depending on how long you have had photography as a hobby. Most of us today think as filters as an option with Photoshop. This is not the case. Before the invention of computers and things like Photoshop we had small glass discs to create the filtered affect. There are many options with filters you can blur a picture, sharpen the picture, and even block out the UV rays. Filters are often used to correct a problem or make a picture look a little different.
Lets talk about filters that blur a photograph. When you are taking a picture of a waterfall at the bottom where the water rises in a cloud you can add a filter to create the cloud in the picture. Cameras don’t always see what the eye sees. In some cases it can have a high resolution to depict the actual water drops rather than the cloud, so adding a filter to your lens can help create the effect your eye sees.
Other filters such as the UV protector guard against the harsh rays. Along with the UV filter you should have a polarizer. The polarizer is used in photography when you are taking a shot into direct sunlight or other light. It will help balance out the photograph so that you don’t get the washed out look. Other filters can give you the washed out effect if you feel your photography would speak more. The filters in Photoshop are not as wide as the filters you can actually buy for your camera, but they can have some of the same effects that you are after.
Have you ever wanted to create a star effect when taking pictures of light filtering through the trees? You can create a star effect with any photograph by using a star effect filter. This filter allows light to pass through a series of thin lines etched into the filter letting the light streak outward in a star shape.
Some filters actually help you create a depth of field or focal point. The fog/ mist filter is one of these. The fog/ mist filter allows for a glow or flare of light in the photograph. Photography is filled with much skill and equipment. Having filters to help create the perfect professional photograph will enhance your fun with your hobby. Lets look at a few more filters.
There are color correcting lenses. If the sky is too blue for the photograph you can choose a filter that will tamp down the blue to a less bright state. If you are into underwater photography you might have filters that allow for the underwater colors. The color spectrum does not have a great range under water. A lot of things will look red even though they are not. It is easy to bring about the original color of underwater life when you use special filters for color correction.
The use of filters in photography not only allows you to have special effects in a photograph to create something new and different, but it can help enhance the shot by adding color or dampening the natural effects of light. Photography has many types of equipment that require skill and knowledge making it a wonderful hobby or profession. If you need a hobby, photography allows you to be creative.
In this modern age, people think of filters only as options on Adobe Photoshop. Many forget that filters were and still are glass rings that are screwed on to the front of your lens, to provide the special effects. It is true however that Photoshop can mimic the same on computer, so many photographers choose NOT to use the glass filters, and later edit the photographs on computer. It is good though, to have an idea of what filters really are, even if you are a great Photoshop user.
1. Blur filters
Say you were shooting a waterfall at the bottom, where you can see the spray from the water form a cloudy area. The camera may capture it as separate droplets of sharp water, and you may NOT want that effect. You could however get the cloudy effect by adding a blur filter in front of your lens. You can get the same effect by using the blur filter of diffuse filter in Adobe Photoshop. Some do it this way; some prefer to do it that way.
2. UV filter
Did you know that ultra violet light from the sun can affect your film? You could use a good ultra violet filter on your lens to remove any UV entering your camera. Since they are clear filters you can leave one of these on every lens. Not only does this serve the purpose of keeping the UV out, you protect the expensive lens coating when you constantly have a UV filter attached on top. Photoshop can’t do that for you!
3. Star filter
Have you seen record labels from the 70s with the disco lights looking like stars? Well that is the effect you can get with a star filter. A star filter makes any point light (like a bulb but not a tube light) appear as if there were rays coming out and making it twinkle like a star does. This filter is very useful when you want to add the feeling of glamour in a setting. Say for example a fashion show?
4. D.O.F. filters
There are filters that can give a shallow depth of field effect even on a small aperture (which is supposed to five long depth of field). They are the fog and the mist filters, which have a clear center in the glass filter, but diffused all around. You may have seen images where the center of the image where to model is located, is sharp and it is blurred everywhere else. This is how they get that effect – the mist and fog filters.
5. Color Correction Filters
You can use color correction filters to enhance or reduce certain colors. When you have studied complimentary colors you have the power o use complimentary filters when you want a lesser shade of a certain hue. On the other hand, you could enhance a certain shade by using the same color filter.
For those of you interested in digital photography, tutorials are going to be a great way to get yourself familiarized with the tricks of the trade. Let’s start off by learning some things about digital cameras.
Filters, where once an essential part of photography but are they still required in digital photography?
Filters are basically made from plastic or glass and are placed in front of the lens to prevent some light waves from reaching the sensor. And although a majority of the filters are manufactured for DSLR cameras, generic filters can also be purchased to be used with digital cameras.
The first most common type of filter being used is the UV filter. Often a UV filter is placed on the lens to not only filter UV rays but also to protect the surface of the lens. Far better to scratch the replaceable filter than your lens itself!
The next is the ND Grad, or Neutral Density Graduation filter. This filter is separated into two sections, with one region being significantly darker than the other. The ND filter is used for landscape photography when there is too much contrast in a scene to hold both hilites and shadows i.e Sky and the land. What is does is to darken the sky and balance the exposure stops between the two, i.e. sky and land. The brightness range problem is also significantly solved with this filter. Another must have recommended in all digital photography tutorials. However this is one case where I personally very rarely use Grads as I prefer to take several exposures and combine them in Photoshop.
Another filter worthy of a mention is a polarizer which cannot be completely replaced by digital post production techniques. A polarizer allows you to adjust specific light rays that should pass through the lens onto the sensor. This filter is best used to compensate for the excessive reflections from a surface like a lake or similar surfaces but also can help saturate colours.
As you can see from just mentioning these few filters above some are no longer a must have in your camera bag while others still a place.
My advice is if you need to use filters in your photography and you can afford it buy the better quality glass filters as you’d be surprised how much cheaper filters can spoil the quality of your images.

As a freelance digital photographer I know that sometimes a picture can sell better with filters or effects. It depends on what your taking pictures of, but sometimes a digital picture can look rather bland and totally lacking originality without effects. A digital picture has to be easily noticed by buyers and sometimes a digital camera cannot do this alone. The solution that a lot of freelance photographers have turned to is Photoshop or a Photoshop-like program. Photoshop can drastically alter a pictures appearance or change dynamic features for an edgier look. Either way, you shouldn’t be afraid to experiment in order to improve your online sales. I will show you a couple of effects I use to spice up my digital photos and increase my profits. For a more comprehensive tutorial check out photoshop and photography lessons
Make Your Photos Glow
The filter diffuse glow will give your pictures a surreal or heavenly look. First, I will tell you where to find it (I am using photoshop). Click on FILTERS – DISTORT – DIFFUSE GLOW, before using this filter make sure that you have the proper color in your palette. If you have blue in your bottom palette, your picture will diffuse glow blue. I usually only use white but you are free to experiment. This effect can only be used on certain types of photographs in order for it to look decent. I wouldn’t recommend trying this filter on freelance photos of people. A good time to use this filter is taking pictures of lights or nighttime photography.
Adding Noise
This is a simple filter that doesn’t make any radical changes but adds a lot of depth to your digital photography. Noise will add speckles making a photo look like the photo is taken with a vintage camera. It is very easy to use, go to FILTERS – NOISE – ADD NOISE. Play around with the settings and I usually click the MONOCHORMATIC button to turn your noise into black and white. This can be use on almost any picture, but I don’t recommend using this on macro photos or any digital photos with a lot of detail.
Outstanding Colors
A neat trick is to desaturate your photo except for a color or two. This will making a certain aspect or color stand out in your photo. It will give the picture a timely look and easily attract eyes to certain parts of your photo. This technique is a little bit harder, involving a few steps. Start off by going to SELECT – COLOR RANGE in the top menu bar. Now you should see your photo in a small box, use the eye dropper tool to select the particular color you want to stand out. Click on the “+” eye dropper button if you want to add another color. When your done click OK, and then, go to SELECT (again) and click on INVERSE. This will select everything but the colors you have chosen. Finally go to IMAGE – ADJUSTMENTS – HUE/SATURATION and slide the saturation slider down to the desire amount. The finished product will be a few outstanding colors and duller backgrounds.
