This church was featured in an episode of the TV show Life After People.

The city of Gary, Indiana was founded as a booming steel city as the twentieth century passed, and areas downtown saw the construction of several impressive buildings during these prosperous early years. In 1925, a cornerstone ceremony took place at 577 Washington St. to commemorate the construction of a Gothic Revival church called City Methodist. It was completed 21 months later, at the cost of one million dollars – 5,000 of which was contributed by the United States Steel Corp. (which also founded the city). Elbert Gary, the chairman of U.S. Steel and origin of the city’s name, donated a Skinner organ as well. The Bedford limestone structure consisted of a 50-foot tall sanctuary nave and elaborate stonework, and was able to seat 950 worshipers; City Methodist had a congregation of nearly 3,000 members in its heyday. The building was also home to Seaman Hall – a 1,000 seat auditorium, and a gymnasium with a full size basketball court. Storefronts were built into the building, with hopes that the income would offset the enormous maintenance costs.

During the 1920s, Pastor William Seaman rallied against the power of the Ku Klux Klan in Indiana, and welcomed black worshipers into City Methodist during a time when African Americans were not permitted in "white churches."

Gary entered a downward spiral during the 1960s, like many other industrial cities during the period. As U.S. Steel employment dwindled, the residents of Gary moved to nearby suburbs; then as jobs left downtown, city many residents moved out altogether while crime and poverty rose. By 1973 the church’s congregation had only 300 members and by 1975 the Methodists moved out of the structure. A second congregation occupied the building until they left in the early 1980s; some storefronts and office space was utilized for a while but soon the entire campus was completely abandoned.

Not long before the second congregation gave up the building, the organ went to a residence in Lansing, Illinois. While an addition was being made to the home and the organ installed, the home burned and most of Op.611 went with it. The console went through the floor into the basement.

City Methodist was burned in the Great Gary Arson of 1997, resulting in a large portion of the roof collapsed or missing. It is now owned by the city of Gary, and its future remains unclear.

A scene from the 2011 movie Transformers 3 was filmed inside this church.

A plaque across from the Old Plaza commemorates the founding of the city. It states: "On September 4, 1781, eleven families of pobladores (44 persons including children) arrived at this place from the Gulf of California to establish a pueblo which was to become the City of Los Angeles. This colonization ordered by King Carlos III of Spain was carried out under the direction of Governor Felipe de Neve." The small town received the name El Pueblo de Nuestra Señora Reina de los Ángeles sobre El Rio Porciuncula, Spanish for The Town of Our Lady Queen of the Angels on the Porciuncula River. The original pueblo was built to the southeast of the current plaza along the Los Angeles River. In 1815, a flood washed away the original pueblo, and it was rebuilt farther from the river at the location of the current plaza.

La Iglesia de Nuestra Señora la Reina de Los Angeles

La Iglesia de Nuestra Señora la Reina de Los Angeles[2] (The Church of Our Lady the Queen of the Angels) is a Catholic church founded on August 18, 1814 by Fray Luis Gil y Taboada who placed the cornerstone of a new church amidst the ruins of the former "sub-mission," the Nuestra Señora Reina de los Angeles Asistencia to serve the local pobladores (settlers). The completed structure was dedicated on December 8, 1822.[3] A replacement chapel, named for Mary, mother of Jesus (La Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de los Angeles, or "The Church of Our Lady of the Angels") was rebuilt utilizing materials of the original church in 1861; Reina, meaning "Queen," was added later.[4] For years the little chapel, which collected the nicknames "La Placita" and "Plaza Church," served as the sole Roman Catholic church in Los Angeles.

The facility has operated under the auspices of the Claretian Missionary Fathers since 1908.

It was designated one of the first three Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monuments in 1962,[5] and has been designated as a California Historical Landmark,#144.

The simple, gabled-roofed adobe church was rebuilt and received a new facade in 1861. A bell tower was added in 1875. In 1912 the church was once more restored and enlarged, making it more "Mission" Spanish than it had been before. In 1923 a tiled roof replaced the late-nineteenth century shingled roof. As originally built, the facade of the church had a single arched entrace placed within a molded rectangle. Above was a single windows which lighted the choir and nave. Above a horizontal molding which followed the parapet molding fo the sides of the building was a single espadana (belfry wall). To the south of the facade was a compasario (single well bell tower) which had a single opening (not a double opening as we see it). And as was true of many of the early Spanish Mexican buildings of California, the church was at first flat-roofed. Thus, what we see today (internally and externally) is a modest village church which essentially dates from 1861 on.

Graphics In Your Church Website Design

Graphics In Your Church Website Design

Graphics in Your Church Website Design

Using graphics in your church website design is very important and are the basis for first impressions. The Internet has become what many call the “Information Highway.” This is true for your website as well as the design you incorporate into the site.

Graphics are the pictorial information to a website. A visitor can view a website, see the pictures and decide if they want to continue viewing or move on to the next website. Before incorporating graphics into your church website design, there is one major decision to be made: Is your designer comfortable creating their own graphics or would they rather use graphics that were designed by someone else? Sometimes graphics are difficult to create. Their beauty and how they blend in with your page design makes creating them even harder. Therefore your designer should decide this quandary himself.

Obtaining graphics from a clipart library is the easiest way to incorporate graphics into your church website design. Clipart libraries give you the choice of design, color and size that fits your website. A two-inch set of praying hands would be an eyesore on a page with tiny doves and a large photo of your church. Therefore choosing the correct size of graphics is important as well. Make sure they are eye catching but not overpowering to the page.

Many of the programs used in designing web pages include a clipart library. If yours does not, you can always log onto the Internet and do a search for graphics and clipart. There is a multitude of free clipart websites that allows you to download all the clipart you want.

Another possibility is obtaining permission from the owner of another website to use some of their clipart. If you are browsing a website and see the perfect graphic for your design, it is possible to contact the owner of the website and ask permission to use that design. Obtaining permission is important for several reasons: The owner of the site may not be the owner of the graphics, the graphics designer may have these graphics copyrighted and use of them without express consent could be a violation of copyright laws, and finally, the graphic may have been used from another designer who has copyrights to it.

Another way of adding graphics is by taking pictures yourself and editing them to fit your needs. Digital cameras afford the designer the ability to create their own graphics by snapping a picture of the graphic they want and then editing it to fit their page. A good example is: Taking a picture of a Bible then cropping and resizing it could give the perfect graphic for your needs.

Whether you design your own graphics or use a clipart library, the usefulness of graphics on a church website design has become common practice and separates the “ok” websites from the “great” websites. Consider using graphics on your web pages to set your sight apart from all the others. You won’t be sorry you did.

To be fair, I should probably add that this is CS2.

Update:
Adobe hate is spreading through the web, and justifiably so. Adobe have become so ignorant and arrogant, they are putting even Microsoft to shame. It is too apparent that they are being run (down) by a bunch of suits who use their brains exclusively to calculate market share and stock bonuses. With each new release of Adobe software, they are becoming more bloated and sluggish. They ignore anything and everything that is known about usability. They creep into every crevice on your system. If I were a developer or designer at Adobe, I’d kill myself… or go work as a hustler.
And it’s sad, and infuriating, because I used to like the software they made. I really did.

An icon (from the Greek word “eikon,” “image”) is a wooden panel painting of a holy person or scene from Orthodox Christianity, the religion of the Byzantine Empire that is practiced today mainly in Greece and Russia. It was believed that these works acted as intermediaries between worshipers and the holy personages they depicted. Their pictorial language is stylized and primarily symbolic, rather than literal and narrative. Indeed, every attitude, pose, and color depicted in an icon has a precise meaning, and their painters–usually monks–followed prescribed models from iconographic manuals.
The goal of this book is to catalogue the vast heritage of images according to iconographic type and subject, from the most ancient at the Monastery of Saint Catherine in the Sinai to those from Greece, Constantinople, and Russia. Chapters focus on the role of icons in the Orthodox liturgy and on common iconic subjects, including the fathers and saints of the Eastern Church and the life of Jesus and his followers. As with other volumes in the Guide to Imagery series, this book includes a wealth of color illustrations in which details are called out for discussion.

Write A Great Church Bulletin

Putting together a great church bulletin doesn’t have to be a chore. Here are a few tips to get you started in making a bulletin that is both functional and fun.

Organization:

Following and presenting the order of the worship service doesn’t have to be the only function of your church bulletin, but that is the main function. In order for it to flow naturally, your bulletin should be organized in a way that keeps things moving along, lets those who are participating know when their parts are coming up, and gives regulars and visitors alike a clear idea of what is going to be happening and when. Announcements and events are generally listed after the service information. Be sure to include as many details as possible including times, dates, locations, and contact information to make it easy for the congregation to make plans to participate.

You will also have to put some thought into what the cover will look like. If you have an idea what the sermon is going to be about, you can find or create some art that fits the theme. You should also use (or create, if need be) a logo for your church that you can use in small or large form for all future covers.

It is always a good idea to have someone look over the bulletin for typos and grammatical errors before going to print.

Contact Information:

In every bulletin, perhaps on the inside cover or inside back cover, you should include the names, phone numbers, and email addresses of all of the church officers as well as the main office number. This makes it easier for visitors to become members, and for members to contact the right person with questions or in case of emergency.

Events:

As we stated above, provide as many details as you can about upcoming events and activities, and double check the information to make sure it is accurate. Though some members will use the contact numbers you have provided to get more information, many will rely on what is listed in the bulletin alone. Even if you produce a weekly bulletin, events should be listed on a monthly basis, if possible in order to give members time to plan, and for you to update the calendar should there be any changes to make.

Graphics:

In order to increase the fun factor, and or just to break things up a little bit, it is always a good idea to include a little bit of graphic art. You should be able to find appropriate clip art online or in your word processing or layout software. A lot of great church bulletins have regular sections that include jokes or cartoons. Before you use those, however, make sure that you have the legal right to reprint them, and let a couple other people read them to make sure they are appropriate.

Binding Style:

For the most part, you will likely use a saddle stitch, two-staple format. There are machines out there called “booklet makers” that are not very expensive to own, and which allow you to do this sort of binding in-house and save money in a rather short time over a print shop.

Create Church Video on Thanksgiving Day with PowerPoint

Thanksgiving Day is coming soon on Nov, 26th. It is a day for expressing thanks for the good things in life, especially family and friends. For many Christians, they may go to the church and express thanks to the God. Prayer of Thanksgiving is very important in any and every Christian’s relationship with God.

If you are a pastor or a person authorized to conduct religious worship in church, and happened to be the person who is appointed for making the arrangement of the Thanksgiving prayer, an announcement DVD/video or one to accompany the prayer will help you solve lots of trouble. Here are some main benefits of exhibiting such DVD/videos:
1. Create an atmosphere for Thanksgiving with DVD/videos play continuously on TV or through a projector
2. Tell people clearly about the arrangement of activities on Thanksgiving
3. In case someone forget about the Thanksgiving prayer, a DVD/video with prayer and background music in it can help people remind more
4. Any other warnings can be displayed out

You might think that making such a streaming church DVD/video is going to be very expensive by asking others to do it, or it may require complex computer skills and lots of time. But believe it or not, with the right way and tool, such a Thanksgiving DVD/video can be created in mainly two steps. Here you can see it.
What you will need: PowerPoint and a PowerPoint to DVD or video burning tool

Step1: Choose a proper PowerPoint template or background
The PowerPoint background can be set either for Thanksgiving or Christian. Here you can find some free Christian PowerPoint backgrounds.

Step2: Create contents for the DVD/video in PowerPoint
Thanksgiving activity arrangement details, events, Thanksgiving prayer, poem and etc can all be displayed in PowerPoint. To make the video more dynamic, you can add various animations. Besides, tables, pictures, clipart, and SmartArt are all available. The picture showed above is just a sample.

Step3: Insert music files to the Thanksgiving presentation
Suitable background music can make the atmosphere more comfortable.

Step4: Set the presentation to run automatically
As the duration of each slide may different, so it’s necessary to set up the time that each slide appears. To do this, you can reference this article: How to Advance Slides Automatically in PowerPoint.

Step5: Convert the PowerPoint you made to DVD or video
This is the last step of creating your Thanksgiving video for church use. To finish it, all you need is just a conversion tool that can help you either convert your PowerPoint to DVD or video. Here, you can try this PowerPoint to DVD converter. After the conversion, you can directly play the output DVD or video at the waiting room or foyer for people to view.

Being thankful is probably what Thanksgiving is all about. So, treasure what we have now, and enjoy the Thanksgiving Day.

Church Logos

Church logos are a special category of logos. Because of the nature of a church the logo must represent the core values, beliefs and faith of the church. The logo must fall within the theological mandate and dictates of the church. Some religions have very specific directions about images and designs that must be followed.

Many churches also resist the idea of a church logo because it is seen as marketing and people usually have an idea on some level that churches should not market. Another concern is that a logo could take a life of its own and replace, in people’s minds, the already rich imagery that most churches have.

When you think about it though most faiths have a mandate on some level to take the message of their faith to other people and share it with them. This is the very definition of marketing. Marketing is spreading a message. So there really should be no reason for a church not to take advantage of tools like logos in its efforts at spreading the message of faith.

Generic Church Logos

Some churches take the first step toward using a logo on their own without even realizing it. They will often find a clipart image of a bible or a cross or some other symbol that represents their faith. Then they will use that symbol to print it on church bulletins, fliers and even church letterhead.

Essentially when a church does this, they have created and established a logo for the church. The problem is that it is usually ineffective in working as a logo for several reasons. The primary reason is that it is nondescript and common. People have seen the same or very similar image in dozens of other places and not all of those places are even churches, let alone this church. To be effective the church logo needs to be distinctive enough that when people in the community see it they automatically think of the church.

The next problem with these accidental church logos is that, while they are simple (which is a good thing) – they are also usually bland. A church logo needs to be very simple and reflective of the faith at the same time, but it also needs to capture the attention of people who see it or it does not serve its purpose. If everyone overlooks it, it doesn’t matter how recognizable it is, the logo just isn’t doing the job it was intended to do.

Professional Help Designing Church Logos

These and many other potential pitfalls are likely for any church that designs their own logo whether they do it on accident or on purpose. There is a lot of know how that goes into designing a successful, effective logo and that know how is beyond most people who have no training in the field. The best way to make sure your church logo does the job you need it to do is to hire a trained, qualified logo designer and work closely with them to help you create the perfect church logo.
