This music video for my friend’s Derby-based band is an example of low tech meets style. What is it they say, it’s not what you’ve got, it’s how you use it. Well, that’s exactly what I did using Adobe Premiere, a Canon HV30, an aging mid-level laptop, and a bit of luck from the video gods!

We used a green screen, a roomful of balloons, some excellent dancers and some creative lighting techniques, but it was the band who shone through on the day with their performance of this classic feelgood song.

The final edit was in HD but for consideration of upload times I had to render one off in SD. DVD quality though, so can’t complain too much!

I must admit, it was great fun working on this one. 1 day filming, 2 weeks editing, 5 hours rendering. But it was totally worth it. Enjoy!

I sped up the video by 20% and that affected the audio. Taken with a Sony HX5V, shot in 1440×1280 at 60 (really 59.94) interlaced frames per second. I use Adobe Premiere Pro CS4 to edit and export. I exported using the "HD 720p 23.976 FPS" preset, but changed the FPS to 29.97 match the original frame rate.

Ride along the Portland Aerial Tram from the South Waterfront District to Oregon Health Sciences University at the top of the hill. Read more about the Portland Aerial Tram, Portland’s commuting urban tram, and aerial tramways.

Watch closely at the beginning and spot a Portland Streetcar bound for downtown.

Question by carpediem104: How does Inkscape compare to Adobe Illustrator?
I like working with Adobe Illustrator to make icons and such, but now that I’ve used up my trial for CS4 and CS5 I need to either buy it or find an alternative. I’m downloading Inkscape to see how it compares. Obviously it won’t be like for like, but I want to know what other people’s experiences are and if Inkscape is suitable for most things. Ideally I’d like to buy Adobe Illustrator, but can’t justify spending that much for it.

Inkscape is not as powerful as Illustrator, doesn’t have as many “bells and whistles” but it is a quite capable vector drawing program. Of course it’s biggest advantage is that it is free. I would certainly go ahead and use it; it does work different than Illustrator, but for most things I think you will find it a reasonable alternative.

Would a tax credit only push a few people to step away from their screens and go outdoors, the can-but-will-not?

Purchasing a club, team or gym membership does not make the buyer physically fit. The same degree of fitness can be achieved on Calgary’s biking, walking and hiking paths and trails. People get fit by choosing to use stairs indoors or outdoors like those at McHugh Bluff. Others keep in shape through paid or unpaid work related activities. How do we monetize their contributions towards relieving Alberta’s ailing medical system? Do we have statistics on the demographics of health-care users specifically as related to income and fitness? Do we have evidence-based research that lack of physical fitness on the part of individual’s is a key component in weakening Alberta’s medical system? Who is driving this bill? Are community members concerned with individual well-being who are not linked to the sports industry (organizations and businesses who monetize fitness) actively engaged in promoting this bill? How will this bill facilitate fitness improvement as part of quality of life issues for city’s most vulnerable populations? Is there any evidence-based research that the the most vulnerable groups, the biggest consumers of public medical system resources, would benefit in any way from a tax-incentive? What percentage of the municipal population who have access to a disposable income required to access pay-per-use fitness activities would find themselves in the tax bracket where this would benefit them? What is the real saving? What are the real costs of this proposed tax-incentive, spread across the broad spectrum of the municipal community, to encourage those few people who have the buying power but not the will, to puchase fitness-related services? Once they have purchased them is their any monitoring device that they would use them? Is there evidence-based research to ensure that those best served by tax deductible fitness-related purchases (those who have disposable income) really require a tax-incentive? If the largest demographic group using health services is a specific income or age group, why not examine ways of reaching that group first by improving universal access to fitness-related courses or memberships by financially assisting those who would-but-cannot because of a price hurdle, then focus on the vague possibility that a tax-incentive might get some people away from their screens and outdoors, the can-but-will-not?

Grunge design is more popular than ever now. How long it will last is anyone’s guess. But for now it is a style every designer should be comfortable with.

One aspect of grunge design is the treatment of type by “distressing.” There are hundreds of “distressed” or “grunge” fonts available for purchase or via free font sites. While they do have their uses, there are drawbacks – ie: characters are not variable so every time you use an ‘e’ for instance , it looks exactly like the ‘e’ you last used – to me, THAT is a drawback.

This tutorial is going to detail an easy way to use whichever font you want and keep it editable. Another great thing about this method is that it can be used for print (300 dpi) and online (72 dpi).

You’re going to need a distressed, dirty, aged or grungy background. Scan a piece of old wood or take a digital pic of a beat up wall, cardboard scrap, a rusty piece of metal or something.

Or search images online for grunge background.

Step 1
Once your background image is open, create a new layer and type something using your favorite or chosen font. Color of font is not important at this point – just make it dark or light enough so you can read what you typed.

(You now have two layers – the background image and the type layer)

Step 2
Click off (or hide) the type layer in the LAYERS PALLET (you won’t be able to see the type now).

Highlight the background image layer and select COLOR RANGE from the SELECT menu tab. From the drop-down menu choose SAMPLED COLORS. (I prefer to click the SELECTION radio button but you should try it and the IMAGE radio button and decide for yourself).

At this point you have to make a decision – if the background image is light in color you should sample the darker or contrasting areas of the background using the eyedropper tool in the COLOR RANGE dialog box. Conversely, if it’s a dark background use the eyedropper tool to select the lighter areas.

Using the slider bar, you’ll be able increase or decrease the amount of color or value you’re selecting

When satisfied, click OK.

(Still only two layers)

Step 3
You’ll see the marquee’d selection. Making sure you’re working on the background image layer, copy the marquee’d selection and then paste it in a new layer (it should create it’s own new layer but to be on the safe side just create one first). You’ve just created your distressed layer – so label it as ‘distressed 1′.

Step 4
In your LAYERS PALLET activate the type layer (you will be able to see the type now).

Move your ‘distressed 1′ layer above the type layer and voila! You’ve distressed your font while keeping it editable! And every character has it’s own unique distressing.

Add layers and images as your design warrants. Experiment with less and/or more distressing… change background images… add multiple background images… use different settings on your layers… instead of NORMAL on the LAYER PALLET, use COLOR BURN or OVERLAY or whatever looks best to you. Try changing the color of your font and it’s opacity – you can do whatever you want, because…

I only know how to change the hue of the photos; I don’t know too much about making 3D photos, but hopefully this helps.

Go to Image > Adjustments > Hue/Saturation.
Play around with the three bars (drag one bar to the farthest right or left and see what effect they have). You can make an image into just shades of predominantly cyan or red.
You can check off the Preview box also to be able to see what’s happening in the actual image.
