Question by Ccc Ccc: What website will record my webcam and save it automatically?
I use my laptop at the library all the time, but sometimes I have to use the bathroom. Unplugging my laptop and bringing it with me is a problem (long story but technical problems with my laptop). So is there any website that lets you record things for like 5 minutes on your webcam, and saves a record of it if the laptop is turned off? Like I want any thief who approaches my laptop to see themselves on webcam, and if they snatch my laptop, that video of them walking up to it is saved somewhere on the internet, even if the laptop is unplugged and no save button is pressed to save it. Anything like that? I already have a program (Prey) that takes a picture of them while they use it, but that’s hidden and isn’t much of a deterrent.
@”You’ll just have to hope that the theif would press the ‘end recording’ button, and not stop the video from uploading”
I already have the stock program to do that. Thanks for answering but I specifically want something that stops recording once the computer is turned off or unplugged. A thief in a library would not press any buttons, they would unplug the computer and run off with it quickly. That’s what I meant by “even if the laptop is unplugged and no save button is pressed to save it”.
@”Think about it. It would NOT matter whether or not they were on camera if the laptop is theirs now! Who can look at the video if they have it, and the laptop?”
That’s why I asked about a website, not a program. I want a website, that records and saves the recording automatically (saves it to the website, like Youtube does, but automatically, so it saves WHILE it’s recording. Youtube, like you said, will only save it after you hit the save button and after it’s fully uploaded). So if the thief takes my laptop, I can visit the website from any other computer, login to my account, and access the video that was recorded. I want it recorded to a website, not recorded to my laptop.
1. Thief takes my laptop
2. I come out of the bathroom and find my laptop gone
3. I go to the library computers and logon to the website that recorded it
4. I now know what the thief looks like, and I give the picture of him to library security in case he comes back (It’s a large library with about 9 or 10 security guards, but oddly, no cameras on the laptop section)

You could use Youtube. Make an account, and begin uploading a video directly from your webcam.. It’ll upload it as soon as the video is done recording. Or Photobucket. No program required. You’ll just have to hope that the theif would press the ‘end recording’ button, and not stop the video from uploading. I’d personally just use the Toshiba web cam utility if you have a Toshiba. Download a program that records videos from your webcam. Go to download.com and search webcam recorder or something, and download one of the free programs that does this. Look in the description for one that doesn’t have a 30 day trial demo or something like that. Anything that isn’t too restricted and records a video through your webcam will do… If they see themselves on screen, or the light in the webcam, they might go away just from that. When you get back, just end the recording, and view, to see if anyone came up to your laptop… you can be careful of people you saw look at your laptop. Of coarse just recording while you’re gone isn’t a foolproof way to protect your laptop, but it might make someone think twice before touching it. Someone who truly doesn’t care might just take the laptop and plugs while you’re gone. Think about it. It would NOT matter whether or not they were on camera if the laptop is theirs now! Who can look at the video if they have it, and the laptop? You really should bring a buddy to the library with you or something. Look around in the library for black spheres on the wall and ceiling, or other kinds of cameras. Sit near one if possible. Also, if you sit near a lot of people, someone might notice a person trying to take it, and stop them, as opposed to sitting alone, where no one would be looking anyhow if you walked off for a minute.
